How to Set Up a PPTP Connection (Windows XP)

Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Under Network Tasks, choose "Create a new connection".

At the New Connection Wizard click "Next"

Choose "Connect to the network at my workplace" and then click the "Next" button

At the "Connection Name" screen enter a name for the connection we are creating. Its purpose is simply to help you remember what you are connecting to. When you are finished click "Next".

Choose "Virtual Private Network connection" and click "Next".

At the "VPN Server Selection" screen enter the name of our VPN server: apple.rockriver.net, then click "Next".

You have successfully set up the VPN connection. You may optionally check the "Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop" box.

After the wizard is finished the connection window should pop up. To get to this screen in the you will have to go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections or if you saved a shortcut to the desktop click to open it.

Enter the username and password supplied to you by Rock River Internet support. Put a check in the box to save your login information for future use. When you have done this click the "Connect" button.

When you have successfully made a connection to the PPTP server a balloon should pop up above the connection icon in the system tray telling you that you are connected.

When you are done using the VPN connection double click the connection icon in the system tray and when the conenction window pops up click "Disconnect". You may also disconnect by right clicking on the connection icon in Start > Control Panel > Network Connections, and choosing "Disconnect".

PLEASE NOTE: While connected to our PPTP server you will only be able to ftp to your website. You will not be able to browse the web, or check your email. This is a security measure to prevent abuse of this system. To use your internet connection as you normally would you must disconnect from the VPN connection to our server.
