Shared T1 Service

There are two types shared T1s (DS1). They are the shared data T1 and the shared voice/data T1.

The shared data T1 is usually run to an MTU (multi-tenant unit) and split up into separate data networks for tenants that choose to use the Internet service. This is generally an excellent and cost effective solution if the T1, routing, and firewalls, are properly designed and managed by a competent ISP. If it is poorly designed and managed, the risks are: unauthorized access to another company's data on the network, one company abusing the network and hogging all the bandwidth, and shared virus and worm attack risks. Since ISPs deal with these risks on a daily basis throughout their networks, competent ISPs are generally best qualified to design and manage a shared data T1 environment.

The shared voice/data T1 is a T1 circuit that has been split into separate voice lines and data lines with a hardware device called a multiplexer. This is usually done by a CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier) in order to help justify the cost of the T1. The problem with this method is that although CLECs might offer good phone line service, CLECs often do not make very good ISPs as voice and data are very different worlds and take different skills. Most CLECs have a regional or national footprint and do not have their data expertise residing in the Rockford area. Also, if the T1 or multiplexer does happen to go down, both your phones and your Internet service will be down at the same time effectively shutting down your business.

We do install, configure, and manage shared data T1s in the Rockford and Belvidere area. We guarantee up time and throughput on all of our T1 circuits. Although our T1 pricing is already competitive, we are so confident in our business model and superior connectivity that we will meet or beat any other vendors pricing on shared data T1s in the SBC/Ameritech coverage area of Rockford, Loves Park, and Machesney Park, Illinois.

The reliability and performance of your Internet feed depends highly upon the quality, competence, connectivity, and engineering of your ISP. That is why T1s will vary greatly among vendors. Although your local loop may be able to carry 1.5Mbps of data, many ISPs will not have the bandwidth to deliver that much data. We have seen low cost T1s sold as full-1.5Mbps that could not even deliver 768kbps. Most smaller ISPs will only have one or two T1s for their Internet backbone. With our fiber optic OC-3 connection to SBC, and our redundant licensed microwave link to AT&T, Rock River Internet can provide your business with fractional, burstable, shared, full, protected, or bonded T1 (DS1) service at lower costs than our competitors and with the reliability, service, and expert local support, that our customers have come to appreciate.

We have multi-homed DS-3 connections on diverse paths from the Internet backbone to our downtown Rockford NOC (Network Operations Center). We use redundant Cisco 7200 family core routers running HSRP for automatic failover and BGP4 routing protocol. Our network has fault tolerance that is unsurpassed in the Rockford area. We are not at the mercy of any one provider's stability and are engineered to run 24/7/365.

All of our dedicated connections include 24/7 monitoring for performance and connectivity and include back-up mail queuing at no additional charge.
